You might remember the movie Above Suspicion, which Harrison Ford starred in back in 1990 (a long time ago!). It was based on the book by Scott Turow and was a huge success. Now, more than 30 years later, the miniseries based on the same book arrives. Above Suspicion, the miniseries, premieres today on Apple TV Plus with the first two episodes of a total of eight. The rest will debut one each week. They are very worth it.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The series shows what happens when a horrific murder rocks the Chicago district attorney’s office. This is because deputy prosecutor Rusty Sabich (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) is suspected of the crime, as he is the victim and lovers. It also shows details of the investigation and how the story affects Rusty’s family. Furthermore, it also shows the struggle for power within the city’s political environment.
What I thought of Above Suspicion?
I’ll start by letting you know that the series is produced by David E. Kelley, responsible for an excellent court series, Boston Legal, and JJ Abrams. For that reason alone it would be worth seeing. But Above Suspicion there is a lot more. The story is sensational, and I warn you that it has several differences from the film (#no spoilers). The most interesting thing is Jake Gyllenhaal’s performance, fresh from the success of Hire Killer. He gives a performance full of charm (after all, it’s Jake, right?), but also with a lot of doubts and nerves on edge. It is impossible to know his role in this story.
Ruth Negga, who plays the betrayed wife, is not far behind. She gives a very different performance to that of Bonnie Bedellia in the 1990 film. More current, despite having reactions that many will not understand. This time, there are much more details about the character and also the reason for her choices. It is also worth highlighting the role of his enemy and tormentor in the film, the new deputy prosecutor, totally determined to incriminate Rusty. This one is made by Peter Sarsgaard, who is Jake Gyllenhaal’s brother-in-law in real life. The clashes between the two are sensational.
Apple TV Plus has made the first 7 episodes available for review. But the last one was missing – and I was dying to know what the outcome would be. Full of twists and turns, with an intelligent and engaging plot, Above Suspicion It’s already on my list of best series of the year.
