Bill is being processed in the National Congress and criminalizes abortion after 22 weeks
The Association of Communication and Advertising Companies (Abap), together with Fenapro, Sinapro-SP, ANER and Instituto Palavra Aberta signed an official note to show repudiation of Bill no. 1904/2024.
The project amends the Brazilian Penal Code and provides for a simple homicide penalty for abortion after 22 weeks of pregnancy, including in cases of pregnancy resulting from rape.
The official note reiterates that legislation in the country already allows women to have the option of carrying a pregnancy to term in specific cases such as rape, fetus with anencephaly or risk to the pregnant woman’s life.
“We will not tolerate such a setback in the country, which, in addition to the violation of rights, confirms and perpetuates the structural machismo of society, which seeks to deny women the right to control their own bodies even in cases of violence”, says the note. “The criminalization of rape victims is absurd, unfair and unworthy. If approved, it will impose a sanction on women that is greater than that imposed on their own rapist.”
The institutions that signed the note understand that it is unacceptable for Bill 1904/2024 to criminalize the victim of rape for not having met the deadline of 22 weeks of gestation to have an abortion. Therefore, given the seriousness of the issue, the entities repudiate Bill 1904/2024 and wait for the National Congress to decide to reject the proposal.
