Today is rock day, baby! The cinema has already made several biographies of great rock names. And on this international rock day, here are some of them that are available on streaming.
Rocketman – Netflix/ Globoplay
It all starts with a super-produced Elton entering what appears to be a support group meeting, admitting that he is addicted to alcohol, drugs and shopping. He then begins to tell his story, in a very Elton John way. Complete with choreography in the middle of the street, dialogues interrupted by songs, and even Elton levitating in the middle of a performance. The film, which is produced by Elton, is obviously made by a big fan. But it also doesn’t shy away from showing his defects, shortcomings, wrong choices, and especially his addictions.
Bohemian Rhapsody – Netflix/ Globoplay
The film shows the early history of the band Queen, when Freddie joined Brian May and Roger Taylor (John Deacon came soon after). It continues with the success of the band through their iconic songs and revolutionary sound, until their near implosion when Mercury’s lifestyle got out of control. It also finally sees their triumphant reunion on the eve of Live Aid. At the time, Freddie, already facing a fatal illness, returned to lead the band in one of the greatest performances in rock history. In addition to the band’s career, the film also covers Freddie’s first love with Mary, and his family relationship with his three bandmates. It also shows the various men who passed through his life. The film is a total thrill.
Tina – The True Story of Tina Turner – Disney Plus
Anna Mae Bullock (Angela Bassett), Tina Turner’s real name, showed an inclination towards music in the church choir as a child. Although her style was not very appropriate for the place. She was also abandoned by her mother at a very young age and raised by her grandmother until her death when she was 16. From then on, she began working as an R&B singer in a band led by Ike Turner (Laurence Fishburne).
Soon the two are involved, have a child and are getting married in Mexico. In 1960 she was already called Tina Turner and, together with Ike, they begin to climb the charts. However, in the following years Ike begins to systematically abuse Tina. She tries to cope with the situation, but after a violent fight she decides to divorce him. She directs her career as a rock & roll singer and her rise is dizzying. But Ike is a threat that always haunts her life. Angela and Laurence were nominated for Oscars for their performances.
Elvis – Prime Video/ MAX
The film is not about Elvis’ story, but rather his story with Colonel Tom Parker. From the moment the two met and the Colonel became fascinated by the “white boy who sings like a black man.” For decades, this strange man made and unmade Elvis’ life. He manipulated everyone around him, which ended up making Elvis make decisions he didn’t want to make. He also got addicted to prescription drugs, which ended up killing him. I chose it as the best of the year when the film was released.
The Kid from Liverpool – Prime Video/ Globoplay
John Lennon (Aaron Johnson) is a young man who does not accept the rules imposed at school and at home. Abandoned by his mother when he was five years old, he lives with his aunt and uncle George (David Threfall) and Mimi (Kristin Scott Thomas). When George dies, Lennon is forced to live with Mimi, who is extremely austere and serious. At his uncle’s funeral, he sees his mother (Anne-Marie Duff), who remains distant. His cousin gets her address, which makes Lennon decide to visit her. The reunion with her son is a dream come true for Julia, who spends more and more time with him. Excited and somewhat reckless, she introduces her son to rock’n’roll. Soon, she awakens in him the desire to form a rock band.
The Doors – MGM Plus
The rise of Jim Morrison (Val Kilmer), lead singer of the rock band The Doors. Amidst his success and indiscriminate drug use, Morrison has a relationship with Pamela Courson (Meg Ryan) and journalist Patricia Kennealy (Kathleen Quinlan), an older woman who embraces sadomasochism. Directed by Oliver Stone.
