Tangerina introduced his team in a thread on the social network
Notícias da TV launched Tangerina, a content platform focused on pop culture, but the launch has so far generated criticism on social media for the lack of diversity in the team.
Last Tuesday (1st), the new site presented its team in a thread on Twitter, which is composed of: Daniel Casto (ex-television columnist for Folha de S. Paulo), Natalia Engler (ex-Folha de S.Paulo, UOL and Omelete), Diego Assis (ex-Folha de S.Paulo, G1, UOL and Omelete), Bruno Silva (ex-Omelete, Nerdbunker, Metrópoles and Correio Braziliense), Gabi Franco (ex-HBO, MTV , Folha and Globo), Luccas Oliveira (ex-newspaper O Globo), Jeje Pinheiro (ex-IGN Brasil, Loading TV and The Enemy), Nicolle Cabral (ex-Rolling Stone, Revista Noize and Monkeybuzz), Rafael Argemon (ex- Estadão, R7, UOL, Time Out and Huffpost), Victor Cierro (ex-TV News) and Bruna Nobrega (ex-Capricho, Hugo Gloss and Loading TV).
“Tangerina arrives to make life easier for people who are looking for quality content. We intend to deliver increasingly personalized experiences to the public”, said Daniel Castro.
However, as soon as the tweet went live, netizens questioned the fact that there were no blacks on the team.
According to data from the 2010 IBGE census, blacks and padros account for 50.94% of the Brazilian population and, according to a consolidated projection in the 2019 PNAD/IBGE, the black population reached the mark of 56.20% in Brazil.
This percentage is not reflected in the country’s newsrooms. According to Press Racial Research Published in November 2021, only 20.10% of the journalists writing to self-declare black or brown, black, 2.10% self-declare as yellow and 0.20% indigenous, account for 77.6% who self-declare as white.
In the platform’s release note, Natalia Engler, who took over as editor-in-chief of Tangerina, said the editors, reporters and critics were “hand-picked”. “They are experienced professionals, who consume and breathe pop culture every day, for years, and who will help filter this sea of content for our readers”, said Natalia.
PROPMARK contacted the platform’s advisors and, until the publication of this article, had not received a response.
