New R$429 billion contract marks the end of almost 40-year partnership with TNT.
After rejecting the offer of R$10.18 billion per year from Warner Bros. Discoverya NBA has just signed an 11-year media rights deal with Disney, NBC e Amazon Prime Video. The new agreement, approved by the board of governors of the American basketball league, guarantees approximately R$429 billion for the NBA over the years.
This contract marks the end of almost 40 years of partnership with TNTas the 2024-25 season will be the last the network will broadcast. Warner Bros. attempted to match the new offer, but the NBA did not consider its proposal valid. In response, Warner Bros. Discovery promised to take “appropriate action” and criticized the league’s decision. Warner’s Turner Sports division said the NBA “misinterpreted our contractual rights” and insisted its offer should have been accepted.
Under the new deal, Amazon Prime Video will stream games on Friday nights, select Saturday afternoons and doubleheaders on Thursdays, following “Thursday Night Football.” Prime Video will also take over the NBA League Pass package and stream games on Black Friday, as well as the NBA Cup quarterfinals, semifinals and final.
ESPN and ABC will retain major league rights, including the NBA Finals, which ABC has broadcast since 2003. Together, they will air nearly 100 regular-season games, with ABC airing more than 20 games on Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons, and ESPN airing up to 60 games on Wednesdays and Fridays. The networks will also air five games on Christmas Day and will have exclusive coverage of the final day of the regular season. In the playoffs, ESPN and ABC will air approximately 18 games in the first two rounds and one of the conference finals series in all but one year.
The return of NBC, which broadcast league games from 1990 to 2002, is a highlight of the new deal. NBC will be guaranteed up to 100 regular-season games, including Sunday night games after the NFL season. Additionally, NBC will air Tuesday games and a Monday doubleheader exclusively on Peacock. NBC will also air the All-Star Game and All-Star Saturday, as well as up to 28 games from the first two rounds of the playoffs. NBC and Amazon will each air one of the two conference finals series on a rotating basis in six of the 11 years of the deal.
