Llama 3.1 challenges companies like Google and OpenAI by offering free access and increased utility.
Meta has announced a new version of its Llama artificial intelligence model, called Llama 3.1. Available in three versions, this update includes the most advanced model ever created by the company.
As with previous releases, Llama 3.1 is open source, allowing free access to everyone. This release reinforces Meta’s commitment to competing with cutting-edge AI startups like OpenAI and Anthropic, as well as large companies such as Google e Amazon. While development costs have not been disclosed, CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said the company is investing billions in advancing AI.
Meta takes an open approach, contrasting with the tendency to keep AI models closed. However, this decision raises security concerns, as the model could be modified to remove safeguards against producing harmful content. Meta assures that Llama is trained to prevent harmful content by default.
According to the company, Llama 3.1 is comparable in intelligence and utility to commercial models from leading companies in the industry. In some benchmarks, it is even considered the most intelligent AI in the world.
In an open letter, Meta’s CEO compared Llama to Linux, the open-source operating system that, despite initial criticism, has become a cornerstone of cloud computing and Android. He believes AI will follow a similar path, with open source quickly closing the gap with proprietary solutions.
With 405 billion parameters, Llama 3.1 is too large to run on regular computers. However, Meta says cloud providers including Databricks, Groq, AWS and Google Cloud will offer hosting options to allow developers to use custom versions of the model, which will also be available on Meta.ai.
Unlike the more recent models from OpenAI and Google, Llama is not multimodal and does not handle images, audio, and video. However, Meta notes that the model is significantly better at using other software, such as web browsers, which could increase its usefulness.
With the release of Llama 3.1, Meta defies the trend of proprietary AI technologies and paves the way for more collaborative and accessible development.
