Last Monday (29), French photographer Jerome Brouillet made his mark on the Paris 2024 Olympic Games with a photo of Brazilian surfer Gabriel Medina in the air, next to his board. The image went viral on social media and is being considered by many as the photo of the games, capturing the moment of Medina’s jump and evoking Henri Cartier-Bresson’s concept of the “decisive moment”.
Cartier-Bresson’s “decisive instant” refers to the precise moment when all the visual elements of a scene align perfectly to create a striking image. Brouillet appears to have achieved this when capturing the Medina jump, resulting in an image that will be remembered for years to come.
In an interview with reporter André Galindo, shown on the program Ça Va, on Sportv, Brouillet detailed the process behind the photograph. “I was ready on the boat along with the other photographers at that moment. At the end of the waves, he (Gabriel Medina) projected himself and I took the sequence of photos. I took the photo, looked at the camera, selected the shots and saw the images from the beginning of the jump and the middle. I looked and saw that I had done a good job. I sent it to my editor to see what happened”, reported the photographer.
Brouillet’s photo quickly spread on social media, being shared and praised by viewers and critics around the world. Many consider it the iconic photograph of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games so far.

This is definitely one of the craziest photos of the Olympics…
It looks like a montage but it’s 100% real.
