According to the PL, in 2023, Brazilians spent more than R$50 billion reais on online betting
Congresswoman Gleisi Hoffmann (PT-PR) filed a Bill in the Chamber last Wednesday (11) that prohibits “throughout the national territory, communication, advertising and marketing actions for the fixed-odds betting lottery”, or bets.
According to the text of the bill, “companies that disseminate advertising or propaganda, including internet application providers, must cease the practice and proceed to exclude the disclosures and campaigns”. In addition, “internet connection providers must proceed to block electronic sites that offer communication, advertising and marketing actions for fixed-odds lotteries, after notification from the Ministry of Finance”.
In her justification, the deputy argues that “Brazilians are exposed to the daily bombardment of media and advertising for betting, especially sports. In 2023 alone, Brazilians spent more than R$50 billion reais on online bets. If we count the 12 months between July 2023 and July 2024, this value jumps to more than R$68 billion. The amounts lost on these bets are in the order of R$24 billion.”
According to the bill, the proposal aims to amend Law No. 14,790 of December 29, 2023 and seeks to “impose severe restrictions on communication, advertising and marketing actions related to the fixed-odds betting lottery throughout the national territory”. The initiative also aims to protect consumers. “The bill seeks to align market practices with the principles of social responsibility and consumer protection”, says the bill.
