Globo announced last Friday (13) that Rodrigo Dourado, artistic director of programs such as Big Brother Brasil and Estrela da Casa, will take over the company’s reality shows. This month, Globo began talks with Boninho, current director of Gênero Reality, for a new partnership as an artistic talent, with segments and participations in programs and development of new projects, but Boninho chose to continue working as a creator, now independently. During the transition period, Boninho will direct Roberto Carlos’ special and, at the end of the year, he will end his contract, in mutual agreement with Globo.
Rodrigo Dourado, who took over as general director of BBB ten years ago and, five years ago, as artistic director of Globo’s main reality show, will be the new director of Reality Genre, responsible for Estrela da Casa and BBB.
Boninho was one of the main people responsible for bringing great reality shows to Brazil, in addition to working on the creation and development of segments and programs of the format on TV Globo. The Big Boss, so nicknamed for his performance in the 24 editions of “Big Brother Brasil”, was in charge of programs such as ‘No Limite’, ‘Hipertensão’, ‘Jogo Duro’, ‘The Voice Brasil’, ‘Kids’ and ‘Voice +’, ‘SuperStar’, ‘Popstar’, ‘Mestre do Sabor’, ‘Estrela da Casa’ and also segments such as ‘Super Chef’ and ‘Jogo de Panelas’.
José Bonifácio Brasil de Oliveira began his career at the age of 17 at Rádio Excelsior, in São Paulo, and from there he moved on to Rádio Globo. In 1984, he debuted on TV Globo with the program ‘Clip Clip’ and, from then on, he directed several musical projects: from classic music videos for ‘Fantástico’ to the broadcast of festivals, shows and live shows such as ‘Rolling Stones’, ‘Hollywood Rock’, ‘Free Jazz’, ‘Rock in Rio’, ‘Especial Amigos’, ‘Show da Virada’ and ‘Especial Roberto Carlos’, among others. In 1992, he was responsible for the creation and programming of the Multishow channel. He also participated in the creation of game segments for ‘Domingão do Faustão’, ‘TV Colosso’ and ‘Angel Mix’. He was also responsible for the core direction of programs such as ‘Caldeirão do Huck’, ‘Vídeo Show’, ‘TV Xuxa’, ‘Estrelas’, ‘Tamanho Família’ and ‘Domingão do Faustão’ and, as Genre Director, he has been in charge of ‘Mais Você’, ‘Encontro com Fátima Bernardes’ and ‘É de Casa’, ‘Caldeirão com Mion’, ‘Panelaço’, ‘Carnaval’, shows, event broadcasts and musical specials.
Rodrigo Dourado has been on ‘Big Brother Brasil’ since its first season. He moved from journalism to entertainment, where he started on the reality show in 2002, as an editor. A few seasons later, he became a director, when he began to take care of the content, post-production and party management.
In ‘BBB 15’, he took over the general direction of the show, a position he held until the 2021 edition of the reality show, when he became the artistic director. During his years in TV Globo’s entertainment industry, Rodrigo Dourado also worked on other reality shows and variety shows such as ‘No Limite’, ‘Fama’, ‘Estrelas’, ‘The Voice’, ‘Hipertensão’ and ‘O Jogo’. This year, alongside Boninho, he participated in the creation and artistic development of ‘Estrela da Casa’, an original format that was a huge commercial success.
Below is the full internal statement released today by Amauri Soares, executive director of TV Globo and Estúdios Globo:
Fellow Globo Studios,
After 40 years of work, Boninho is ending his cycle at Globo.
Boninho has a professional history that speaks for itself.
Since 1984, when he arrived at Globo, Boninho has helped create and produced dozens of programs, shows, specials and festivals. ‘Clip Clip’ was the first. Then came the classic clips for ‘Fantástico’, ‘Hollywood Rock’, ‘Free Jazz’, ‘Rock in Rio’, ‘Especial Amigos’, ‘Show da Virada’, ‘Especial Roberto Carlos’ and “Carnaval Globeleza”, among others.
He was the director of programs such as ‘TV Colosso’, “Angel Mix”, ‘Caldeirão do Huck’, ‘Vídeo Show’, ‘TV Xuxa’, ‘Stars’, ‘Family Size’, ‘Faustão’s Sunday’, ‘More You’, ‘Meeting with Fátima Bernardes’, ‘It’s at Home’ and ‘Caldeirão com Mion’. And he was one of the creators of the Multishow channel.
For the past 25 years, Boninho has hosted Big Brother Brasil, earning him the nickname Big Boss. He has also hosted the reality shows ‘No Limite’, ‘Popstar’, ‘The Voice’, ‘Mestre’ do Sabor’ and others.
Experienced showrunner and passionate about television, Boninho will always be remembered as one of Globo’s greats.
I still tried to keep him with us, in a new model, acting as a video talent. But Boninho didn’t accept it. He preferred to continue acting as a creator, now independently.
The new Director of the Reality Genre will be Rodrigo Dourado.
With 22 years at Globo, Dourado is a homegrown talent and was trained here at the Studios by Boninho himself, since he migrated from Journalism.
Rodrigo Dourado has been working on ‘Big Brother Brasil’ since the first edition and has been directing the reality show for 20 years.
An experienced and highly qualified professional, Dourado also directed ‘No Limite’, ‘Fama’, ‘Estrelas’, ‘The Voice’, ‘Hipertensão’ and ‘O Jogo’.
The transition in the Reality Genre Direction begins now and continues until the end of the year.
Boninho, as director, is still completing the delivery of the season of Estrela da Casa, currently being shown, and the Roberto Carlos Special.
The direction of Carnival, which was with Boninho, passes to the Music Genre, with Joana Thimoteo and team.
The development of the new season of BBB, which will be shown from January 2025, is already under the leadership of Rodrigo Dourado and his team.
On behalf of the entire team at Estúdios Globo and TV Globo, I would like to thank Boninho for the years of partnership and joint creation. I also wish him much success in the new initiatives he plans for the future.
As for Dourado, we hope that he will have the same success as the director of Gênero Reality that he has had in the programs he has led so far. And, for that, he will have the support of all of us.
Hug
Amauri Soares
