Agatha was an exceptional villain in the great series WandaVision (for me, the best ever made by Marvel). And it was so successful that Agatha got a series to call her own. Agatha Forever premiered today on Disney Plus, with two episodes – the others will premiere one each week. I’ve already seen the first two, which have some very good things – and some not so good –, but it made me want to keep watching.
Who watched WandaVision knows that Agatha was trapped in a spell cast by Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen). But three years have passed, and she manages to free herself from the spell. The problem is that she has lost her powers. To get them back, she needs to form a coven of witches (the more correct word, conventicle, is very bad, lol) to help her. With them, and another enthusiastic young man, she will embark on a dangerous journey.
What did I think?
The first episode starts off great. It shows Agatha (now called Agnes) as a small-town cop investigating a murder. But the arrival of Aubrey Plaza’s character (if you need someone to play a strange character, just call her, lol) makes her recover her memory of who she is. This whole part is very interesting, even the opening credits, which feature the names of the characters and not the actors. From the moment she starts looking for witches to form her coven, however, things get repetitive. Of course, the diva Patti LuPone is always sensational, and Debra Jo Rupp, from That 70’s Showis the most fun.
But from the moment they all come together, along with Joe Locke (Heartstoppers), things get going. There’s a bit of horror, a bit of comedy, in a kind of atmosphere Abracadabra. And the path of the witches seems like it will be very interesting. There are several references to WandaVisionincluding characters and actors who appeared in that series. This is the case of Emma Caufield, from Buffy the Vampire Slayeran always interesting actress who didn’t have many chances in Hollywood.
But of course, the show is by Kathryn Hahn, who has been nominated for several awards because of WandaVision. She’s quite over the top in the early stages, but that’s just how Agatha is. And she’s a great actress (I’ve seen her on Broadway), and she’ll definitely rock the series. The outlook is good.
Curiosity
The ninth episode of the season will be directed by Brazilian Gandja Monteiro, who has also directed two episodes of I’m tired. Powerful, right?
