In a significant step to reinforce its commitment to circularity, KitKat launches a limited edition packaging made from 100% recycled plastic, certified by the ISCC (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification) mass balance method. This is the debut of this type of material in chocolate packaging in Brazil. The initiative is part of Nestlé’s efforts to increase the recycling of plastic waste and minimize the environmental impact of its packaging. The company has committed to reducing the use of virgin plastic by a third by 2025 and having 100% of its packaging designed for recycling or reuse. Currently, the number is at 98%.
The new KitKat comes as a result of a new regulation from Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency), which allows the use of recycled post-consumer materials (PCR) obtained by advanced recycling in packaging with direct contact with food. ISCC supports the adoption of innovative recycling technologies capable of transforming difficult-to-recycle materials into new plastics, promoting the transition to a circular economy. The limited edition, indicated on the packaging, is now available to consumers and will be sold in the country until stocks last.
“Nestlé is committed to increasing the recycling of plastic waste in Brazil, seeking to reduce the environmental impact generated by packaging throughout its entire life cycle, from production to disposal. KitKat, which already has a solid pillar of sustainability through the Nestlé Cocoa Plan and in its operations, now reinforces this commitment with a focus on recycling”, says Nathaly Glashan, Executive Manager of Chocolates at Nestlé.
To share information about the new packaging, KitKat provided an online page where consumers can understand the process in a simple and educational way. The content is available at:
Sustainability is present in KitKat’s trajectory, which has a history of improvements throughout its production chain. In 2009, Nestlé launched the Nestlé Cocoa Plan, which works to improve the lives of people who live and work on farms and ensure sustainable cocoa production. In 2016, KitKat became the first Nestlé chocolate brand to use 100% sustainable cocoa and also adopts 100% renewable energy in its production.
