Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, authorized the relaxation of posts calling for violence and the death of Russian military personnel and President Putin. Permission is granted only to residents of nearby regions, namely Armenia, Azerbaijan, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia and Ukraine.
The decision is temporary and should be restricted to the military and members of the army, without spreading to civilians. The violent speech is given as a way to pressure the Russian government to stop the war.
“As a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, we have temporarily allowed forms of expression that would normally violate our rules, such as violent speech such as ‘death to Russian invaders’. We will not yet allow credible calls for violence against Russian civilians,” Meta said.
It is important to remember that on March 4, the Russian media regulator blocked Facebook services in the country and limited the activities of media outlets in the territory. The justification was to protect Russians from discrimination on the internet and to combat alleged “fake news” that the media transmitted.
A Metasince the beginning of the war, announced that it was looking for ways to combat the Russian attack and show support for Ukraine, warning that civilians and especially journalists and politicians protect their accounts with more digital security.
