Anyone who knows me knows that I love romantic comedies. From the dumbest to the smartest. I always look for the genre in the streams. So I was happy when Telecine sent me the film The Book of Love to evaluate. The film is in the Premium Premiere Session this Saturday (12/03), at 10pm. It is also available on the Telecine app. But despite cute moments, the film has several problems.
Sam Claflin is Henry Copper, a writer who has his book stranded in English bookstores. But he discovers with surprise that in Mexico he is a bestseller. So his publisher sends him to the country for a tour. There he meets Maria (Verónica Echegui), the translator of the work. But, he soon realizes that there is something wrong with this story. That’s because Maria rewrote the whole story in a much more peppery way.
What did I think of The Book of Love?
Sam Claflin embodies the Hugh Grant of the 90s in a very charming way. He’s the Englishman without much skill, but who, for those who know the actor, knows he’s quite charming. From the beginning, it is clear that The Book of Love has good intentions and has very graceful moments. It is also interesting that it is a bilingual production, with dialogues in English and Spanish.
The script has the expected clichés of the genre. There’s the completely different couple, the ex-husband who reappears to get in the way, the cute family. Not to mention the end of the declaration of love in front of the whole world. And of course, the unexpected situations, the difficulty of adapting to different cultures. And as always, there are the unexpected and unlikely details. But that’s not the problem The Book of Love. The real problem is the total lack of chemistry of Sam Claflin and Veronica Echegui (from the series Trust, from StarPlus). It’s clear from the start that Henry and Maria are going to fall in love. But at no time do you believe in that love/passion. Separated, the two work. Especially in the scenes involving the little boy Diego. There’s one in particular between Henry and Diego when the two try to communicate without knowing each other’s language. It’s cute and cute.
The problem is that the basic principle of a romantic comedy is the love of the two characters. And in the case of The Book of Loveit is very difficult to believe this.
