Google released this Friday (11) an open letter in which it highlights the company’s concern with provisions of Bill 2360 (PL 2360/2020), also known as the Fake News PL. The proposal, authored by Senator Alessandro Vieira (Citizenship-SE), is currently being processed in the Chamber of Deputies, reported by Deputy Orlando Silva (PCdoB-SP).
The published document highlights, among other issues, how PL 2630 can make digital platforms less secure by forcing the disclosure of strategic information that could be used by malicious people.
Another point highlighted by the content is the possibility that the approved text reduces access to relevant information from different sources. It also points to the proposal’s potential to harm companies of all sizes, which may have reduced ability to promote their products and services online.
“Disclosure of this type of data will not help in the fight against disinformation. On the contrary, it will offer malicious actors a “guide” on how to circumvent the protections of our systems, harming the quality and security of our search results”, writes Fabio Coelho, President of Google Brazil.
Since its announcement, PL 2360/2020 has raised strong opinions on both sides, in part by those who want to control the growing increase in fake news and by those who claim that the measure is a risk to digital security.
