Who hasn’t seen that photo on Instagram of someone holding a classic Starbucks cup with the name written on it? For those days may be coming to an end.
The cafe franchise is planning to phase out its cups by 2025, explaining the problem with the current model. While the darling cups are a strong reminder of the company, Starbucks says they are part of a throwaway culture that needs to end.
Disposable cups would be replaced by a new, more collective model. The idea is that each customer brings their own mug or uses one of the ceramic mugs provided by the store. The plan is expected to start in the United States and Canada.
Starbucks has a plan to divert customers’ attention away from disposable cups, in a “Borrow-a-Cup” model, where the customer makes a deposit to get a durable cup returned after use.
Starbucks vice president of product experience, Amelia Landers, said this isn’t the first time they’ve thought of an alternative to the plastic cup.
“We developed a new cup that had a very low environmental footprint, was lightweight, recyclable polypropylene, and could replace 100 single-use disposable cups,” Landers said.
Customers paid a $1 deposit to collect the cup and had the money back when they disposed of it in a smart bin for proper waste processing. Still at an early stage, the proposal may inspire other franchises to adopt the model in the future.
