There are some things we don’t understand about the Oscars. In the best song category, for example, voters placed among the finalists the song Somehow You Doof the movie Four days with her. Nothing against the music, which is even beautiful. But the film is from 2020 (released in American theaters in early 2021), and for some reason it ended up falling in the taste of voters. Maybe it’s because it’s written by Dianne Warren, who has her 13th nomination here without winning. And you probably won’t win again! Either way, the song and the movie are worth knowing. four days with her is a drama with Glenn Close and Mila Kunis, which will premiere on Telecine this Tuesday, the 22nd, at 10 pm. On the same day, it will be available on the streaming service.
Deb (Glenn Close) lives in her house with her husband. Everything looks peaceful. Until her daughter Molly (Mila Kunis), a drug addict, knocks on her door asking for shelter. Begrudgingly, she rescues her. It is Molly’s 15th attempt at rehab. Only now they discover a new and intensive healing therapy. The problem is that Molly needs to be clean for four days to start this treatment. And so mother and daughter will go through many trials to get there.
What did I think of four days with her?
Films about family members’ attempts to save drug addicts are commonplace in Hollywood. I remember recently dear boy, with Steve Carell. And still Once upon a Dream, where Glenn herself played the mother of an addict, played by Amy Adams. Four days with Her follows another line. It seems at times even a thriller movie, when Deb is in the tension that Molly is back on drugs. And that’s where the talent of the actress comes in once again. There’s a scene of Deb with her other daughter, when she realizes she left her wallet at home. The desperation on her face that Molly can take the money to buy drugs is priceless. A great moment from Glenn.
But that’s what we expect from her. Certainly the greatest actress of her generation, always wronged by the Oscars. But, the big surprise here is Mila Kunis’ performance as the drugged-out daughter. It’s desperate to see the pain, the suffering. She has a great scene where she describes her addiction to students at a school. The interesting thing about all this is to see that the Academy – and other awards – remembered the song, but forgot these two exquisite performances by Glenn and Mila.
The film shows the terrible situations of those who have to go through this. And it’s based on a true story, which fortunately had a happy ending. Amanda Wendler has been “clean” for over four years. She and her mother Libby Alexander now advocate for addicts and their families.
