On March 8th, the “International Women’s Day”, which represents a series of struggles and challenges already faced and which are not yet close to an end. Gender inequality is still strong in Brazil, and according to IBGE data, females earn about 20% less than males.
Thinking about the constant battle and the difficulties of women to enter the market in high-ranking positions, we invite Miriam PereiraManaging Partner of PR Mediaan agency specialized in indoor and outdoor media, to talk about the topic.
DNAEWS: What are your motivations for becoming an entrepreneur?
Miriam: I think it’s a vocation. Since I was very young, I was attracted to being “the owner of my nose” and I always thought that the best and most dignified way to contribute to society is to generate prosperity and be able to offer jobs and make the economy go round.
DNAEWS: Do you think women still have a harder time being successful in their careers than men, just because of gender?
Miriam: Sadly yes. It is enough to analyze the super misogynist movements carried out by some politicians, for example, who should defend not only social equality, but also between genders, approving Laws that regulate society in the direction of equality and are the first to walk in the opposite direction.
DNAEWS: What was the biggest challenge you faced, being in a high position and being a woman?
Miriam: Having to prove every day that we are capable. We need to accomplish many times more, to be able to be heard and respected. We face double and sometimes triple journeys. I studied at night since I was thirteen years old, I did two degrees, a postgraduate degree and an MBA at ITA/ESPM, working all day, studying at night and on Saturdays, and having to take care of the house and then the child. And still always make what we have to deliver from an intellectual and professional point of view prevail, doing everything possible to take the focus off the fact that we are women.
DNAEWS: How can we encourage other women to invest more in their own careers?
Miriam: Every human being has a vocation and must pursue their dreams. In the specific case of women, we have the right to be whatever we want to be and overcoming obstacles offers even greater pleasure to our victories! Therefore, we need to mark our positions, put our talents in favor of the world and with that acquire the respect and full equality that we desire, without the need to lose our femininity and all the attributes that differentiate us.
DNAEWS: What are the best tips for entering the job market?
Miriam: Study a lot; be persistent; be resilient; Use your intuition to your advantage. Success comes to those who resist, not just the best!
