the golden age this week ended its first season on HBO and HBO Max. It was a great pleasure to see. It should be present at the next Emmy in several categories. Excellent period production, exquisite costumes and hairstyles. The characters are interesting and engaging. It touches on situations such as racism, class prejudice, social climbing, and the difficulty of accepting new times. During 9 episodes you are transported to a futile but delightful universe full of balls, dresses, and backstage gossip. I loved it!
For those who don’t know what it’s all about, the golden age takes place during a period of immense economic change in the United States. These are times of great conflict between the old methods and the new systems, and of enormous fortunes made and lost. In 1882 with young Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson) she moves from Pennsylvania to New York City after the death of her father. She moves in with her wealthy aunts, Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski) and Ada Brook (Cynthia Nixon). Along the way, she meets young Peggy Scott (Denee Benton), an aspiring writer looking for a fresh start. But when she arrives in New York, Marian inadvertently becomes embroiled in a social war between one of her aunts and her stupendously wealthy neighbors. They are George (Morgan Spector), a ruthless railroad tycoon, and his ambitious wife, Bertha (Carrie Coon).
What did I think of the first season?
the golden age is a creation of Julian Fellowes, the same of Downton Abbey e Belgravia. E the golden age It’s a mix of the two series. It clearly has the division of the aristocrats and the “new money”. There’s the innocent but resolute young woman. And also the universes of employees and bosses. The novelty is on account of the arc of the black family, which is a novelty in the world of Julian Fellowes series. And then there’s, of course, Christine Baranski, with her phenomenal quips. Lady Grantham (Maggie Smith) from Downton Abbey would love to meet her.
The cast is a delight to watch. There are a lot of big names on Broadway that we rarely see in series. Nathan Lane, Donna Murphy, Kelli O’Hara are all wonderful! It makes you want to “applaud in the open stage”. Louisa Jacobson, daughter of Meryl Streep, debuts in style. I liked her! And I especially loved the couple made by Carrie Coon and Morgan Spector. Companions, with common goals, and perfect chemistry.
the golden age has a silly Brazilian title – the right thing would be the golden age, Where the golden age – but it’s great. Worth checking out on HBO Max. I’m already waiting for the second season, which has already been approved.
