The streaming multinational Netflix shook its subscribers with the news that it will start charging those who “lend” the account to other users.
With the disclosure of more details, the company said it will work through notifications sent to the holder’s cell phone or laptop when a new device tries to connect, which can be refused and blocked by the administrator. If the account owner wants to add the new access, he will be charged an additional fee to his regular monthly fee.
Control and identification will be done through IP addresses, and the initiative is due to Netflix’s objective of discouraging account sharing. A study carried out by the Advertising Search Foundation showed that in the United States alone 36% of users claim to share their account with other people.
Opportunity for competitors?
Recently, Netflix lost its level of hegemony in streaming movies and series. Criticized for higher prices than competitors, the company may lose even more its market share with the new charge.
The new fee could be followed by other streams, or it could be used to sink Netflix for being the only one to adopt this measure.
