I love movies that take place in World War II. Especially since many of them tell totally improbable stories that actually happened. Just take the example of the excellent Dunkirk (available on Netflix, HBO Max and Globoplay). And now, another movie that goes in the same way had its first trailer shown today (06). IT’S The Soldier Who Wasn’t, scheduled to arrive on Netflix on May 11. I loved it and was super curious to see it!!
As I said, the story is based on real events described in the book by John McIntyre. The main character is Ewen Montagu (Colin Firth), a judge, spy and naval intelligence officer from England. He planned the Mincemeat operation, as well as being one of the two agents who carried it out. The two intelligence officers plotted to break Hitler’s deadly grip on Europe with a creative and daring plan. They used a corpse and false documents to deceive German troops. All in the hope of changing the course of World War II and saving tens of thousands of lives.
Curiosities
This story was once the subject of a 1956 movie, The Man Who Never Was, with Clifton Webb. Legend also has it that it ended up serving as the inspiration for screenwriter Ernest Lehman to write international intrigue, by Alfred Hitchcock. Another connection of this story with the entertainment world is that Ian Fleming would have been one of the architects of this plan. As everyone knows, Fleming is the creator of James Bond. In the movie he is played by Johnny Flynn, from Emma.
In fact, the list of The Soldier Who Wasn’t That’s awesome. The main ones are Colin Firth and Matthew Macfadyen (fun fact: both were once Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice). But there’s still Kelly Macdonald (Colin’s love interest in Nanny McPhee)Penelope Wilton (Downton Abbey) and Jason Isaacs. I was dying to see it!!
