Burger King received an extrajudicial notification from Palmeiras, demanding that the Whopper Rib movie, a new sandwich made with pork, a nickname attributed to the club, be taken off the air. Developed by David, the video features people wearing T-shirts in the colors of other teams — such as Corinthians, São Paulo, Santos and Flamengo — trying out the new Whopper.
“There are some pigs that you can swallow,” says a character in the film. “This one is a champion, only this one”, jokes a young man in a red and black shirt.
According to an article in the GE, in the notification, the club also demands that ‘all and any posts’ related to the campaign be removed from the air, under threat of taking the case to court. The legal alviverde was based on article 87 of the Pele Law, which says that ‘the entity’s name and symbols are their exclusive property, with legal protection’.
In a statement, Burger King informed that the idea was to present the new product in a ‘fun way’. “On the notification of Palmeiras, received by Burger King, in relation to the Whopper Costela launch campaign, the brand emphasizes that its objective was to present the new product in a fun way, showing the unique taste of pork. Burger King clarifies that at no time did they mention any football club directly”, informed BK.
