Twitter Inc. announced on Monday afternoon (Apr 25) that it accepted the offer made by billionaire Elon Musk to buy 100% of the company. Musk owns Tesla and SpaceX. The deal was closed at US$ 44 billion (R$ 214.5 billion). Each shareholder will receive $264.25 per share they own, and the company will become privately held.
“Free speech is the foundation of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital city square where issues vital to the future of humanity are debated,” Musk said in a statement.
He was critical of moderation in the platform’s content and made several statements in the press about freedom of expression issues. He has more than 80 million followers on the social network.
