Digging up the archives, Oakley relaunches the Sub Zero, a product that promised to weigh next to nothing — which it continues three decades later. Featuring its original lens shape from the early 90s, the Sub Zero features technical compositions that allow the past to meet the present in a unique design.
Sub Zero is part of the MUZM Collection – a selection of models that will be re-released with current technologies and interpretations. In 1992, Sub Zero was introduced inspiring people to imagine what the future of sunglasses would look like. Now it receives a technological update. Equipped with Prizm™ Lens Technology with a mask design, plus Unobtainium® nose pads and temple tips to ensure a perfect fit and prevent slippage, the Sub Zero has its place in Oakley history.
Brian Takumi, VP of Oakley, Creative Soul of the brand, talks about the sun line’s heritage: “In the ’90s, Sub Zero didn’t just break the mold of what a sunglasses should be. He changed the way they were made. It completely changed the look and feel of modern eyewear, showing that when you “seek nothingness” to achieve a goal, the impossible can be achieved. With this reissue, Oakley continues to make the impossible possible. Thirty years ago, Sub Zero set the stage for Oakley’s next chapter, fueling an era of unprecedented success. And now, this reissue sets the stage for what’s to come in the future.”
Skateboarding icon Aori Nishimura, part of Team Oakley, is the star of the Sub Zero launch. From Tokyo to California, Aori is part of a new generation of female street skaters. After being the first Asian skater to win a gold medal in the street mode of the X Games, Aori has become a household name and has joined the select circle of skateboarding elite that make up the video game. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2. Most recently, Aori represented Japan in the street sport of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Aori Nishimura: “Skateboard culture over the decades has influenced my style when I’m on or off skateboarding, and I’m naturally drawn to unique and disruptive designs, which immediately drew me to Sub Zero. Through my personal quest, I connected with the attitude of being able to achieve the impossible and so it’s amazing to be a part of this reissue.”
To celebrate the Sub Zero relaunch, Oakley created a special time capsule-inspired kit for some influential members of the Oakley Collective, as well as members of Team Oakley. The kit draws on Sub Zero’s history through a tribute to 1992, with the product inside a time capsule designed with an early ’90s look.
