O Google announced the dismissal of a senior engineering manager, Satrajit Chatterjee, who was developing artificial intelligence software, after being accused of harassment by co-workers.
The attitude came after the scientific journal Nature published an article by Anna Goldie and Azalia Mirhoseini defending the thesis that AI would be a very important tool in chip development. However, Google employees pointed out in a second article that adaptations to basic software outperformed AI in one test. Even with Google declining to comment on the matter, the leaked draft was confirmed by two employees.
In addition, Chatterjee’s attorney denied allegations that the manager had spread false information about Goldie and Mirhoseini, and that “it’s a shame that Google took this course.”
Google claimed that the second article did not meet the standards and so refused to publish it, firing Chatterjee shortly after the case. The manager was one of the biggest players on the project.
The impact of the controversy could be negative for the sector’s financing and the advancement of chip development, in addition to generating doubts about any article published by the company. Google gave no further information on the true causes of the layoff.
