It was a night of surprises at the 2022 BAFTA TV Awards, with some of the top favorites losing out on honors as the ceremony saw figurines presented to a wide variety of winners.
That said, the star de Killing Eve , Jodie Comer, reportedly claimed her second BAFTA lead actress, this time for Help the drama written by Jack Thorne about the crisis in British homes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Help won two awards, as did Jimmy McGovern’s prison series, Time which saw Sean Bean win the award for best lead actor.
Among the main surprises was It’s A Sin , Russell T. Davies’s critically acclaimed series about the AIDS epidemic, which entered the evening with six nominations, including five in the performance categories, but came away empty-handed. Not that Davies should be upset, the showrunner of Doctor Who que returned was able to proudly introduce his new Time Lord, Ncuti Gatwa, from Sex Education which was announced just hours before the ceremony on the red carpet.
Sex Education also left without a gong, losing his two nominations, as well as We Are Lady Parts. Instead, the wins were spread across the board, with shows like Motherland, Alma’s Not Normal e Stath Lets Flats winning victories.
Steve McQueen, who lost a BAFTA for his acclaimed series Small Axe in 2021, won an award for the documentary series Uprising which he did alongside James Rogan.
In a highly politicized ceremony, many of the speeches were from the winners supporting public service broadcasters, particularly Channel 4, which the UK government is currently controversially planning to privatize.
“The BBC and Channel 4 bring us together,” McQueen said onstage. “We have to hold on tight and fight for every piece.”
Meanwhile, writer Dennis Kelly, who won the single drama award forTogetherread a damning statement by the COVID-19 Survivors Group UK attacking the government’s response during the pandemic.
The night also saw Billy Connelly awarded the BAFTA Fellowship, the British Academy’s highest honor. In an upbeat recorded acceptance video, the Scottish icon reflected on his 50 years in comedy, but also noted that he was suffering “a lot” from Parkinson’s disease.
