Who got used to seeing Nicolas Cage at a high level of slutty in films like Jiu-Jitsu, On the Traffic Route or predator instinct – just to name a few – you must not imagine that he is a great actor. And that he made films that marked an era. I speak of the times of Con-Air, The Other Face, The Rock. Not to mention cute movies like Moon Spell, Drawn by Fate (does anyone remember? I love it!) or Peggy Sue – Her Past Awaits. We can catch a glimpse of this Nicolas Cage in The Weight of Talent, which opens in theaters this Thursday. Fun, unexpected, and very good, the film mixes homage and good humor in a highly efficient formula.
The film turns Nicolas Cage into movie star Nick Cage. Creatively dissatisfied and facing financial ruin, the fictionalized version of Cage has a rough time. Both in his career and in his relationship with his daughter. To try to work things out, he accepts an offer of $1 million to attend a fan’s birthday party. This is the very fanatical, passionate and dangerous Javi (Pedro Pascal). But things take an unexpected turn when Cage is recruited by a CIA agent (Tiffany Haddish). He then has to live up to his own legend. And use his characters’ teachings to save himself and those he loves.
What did I think of the movie?
It’s obvious that director and screenwriter Tom Gormican is a self-confessed fan of Cage. But most importantly, he also knows the affection and connection that fans have with the actor. And with that, he made a passionate film, one that laughs at the references along with Cage and the audience. And with that he makes a metalanguage experience with sensational results. From the very first scene, with references to Con Air, e How do I Live, the film already conquers.
In fact, there are several references to the most diverse cage movies, which fit the story perfectly. From the pool scene of Farewell in Las Vegas until Croods 2. That is, there is a Nicolas Cage for every age group of fans. The film even creates a younger alter ego, Little Nicky, made by a special effects team that rejuvenated the actor. It is well dated from the time of The Vampire’s Kiss (1988). Nicky functions as the conscience that reminds the actor that he is a star. The scenes between the two are great!
Nicolas Cage and the others
Nicolas Cage is the central point and star of the story, but there are excellent participations. Starting with Pedro Pascal, who plays the big fan Javi. He gets carried away and lets the fascinated child take care of him when he comes across his idol. It’s a brave performance with no strings attached. In the roles of Nick’s ex-wife and daughter are Sharon Horgan (from game night) and Lily Mo Sheen (who is none other than the daughter of Michael Sheen and Kate Beckinsale). I loved them both! And then there’s Tiffany Haddish and Neil Patrick Harris in fictional characters. Demi Moore and director David Gordon Green, who directed Cage in Joe2013, appear as themselves.
In this whole adventure, it’s impossible not to laugh, smile, and be enchanted by a movie / tribute that will make you even more a fan of Nicolas Cage. Serious candidate for the best of the year list!
