Representativeness reflects the impact of pressure from various professionals and from the Papel & Caneta collective on the organization of the festival
The Cannes Film Festival announced the names of the judges for the “Shorlist”, and Brazil will have 7 professionals. Among them, five are black, such as Joana Mendes, president of Clube de Criação, Felipe Silva, founder and CCO of Ghana, Dilma Campos, CEO of Outra Praia, Patrícia Moura, head of content at GUT São Paulo and Gabriela Rodrigues, head of Soko’s culture and impact.
This representativeness reflects the impact that pressure from various professionals and from the Papel & Caneta collective had on the lack of diversity in the choice of Brazilian jurors and jury presidents. Among the 23 announced in April, the festival invited only one black person.
The criticism made Simon Cook, ceo of the festival, recognize that the organization was wrong in the selection and promise inclusive actions. Earlier, in response to PROPMARK, the organization had said that “the composition of the jury reflects the industry”.
In addition to the professionals mentioned, the Brazilian team includes Daniel Ottoni, CCO of Tracylocke, and Ariane Polvani, creative director Wieden+Kennedy.
