On May 17, 1990, the World Health Organization (WHO) excluded homosexuality as a disease or disorder, and started to treat it as just a personality trait.
It is somewhat disturbing to think that this was only 32 years ago. And it is even more disturbing when we analyze some data, such as the one that informs us that in the year 2019, 66% of LGBT+ professionals still believed that assuming their identity could hinder their careers. Considering how important this fight is, we separate campaigns that participate in this essential and necessary fight.
Air France
The airline Air France focused on accessibility and actions for the team and passengers, including a live that addressed necessary topics, a conference for employees, the adaptation of the company’s logo with the colors of the flag on its social networks, special flights on the 17th and, last but not least, a fundraiser to support SOS-Homophobie. Inclusion, awareness and information. Air France did not disappoint.
libraries
The libraries of São Paulo and Parque Villa-Lobos had some activities to honor the date. On the 13th of May, there was an online lecture with drag queen Rita von Hunty, who spoke more about the LGBT movements and addressed very important topics that some people who are not familiar with the terms may not know so deeply, such as the meaning of acronym, differences between sexuality and gender identity, representation, acceptance and respect. Those who signed up for the lecture received a real class from Rita.
The reading club at the Parque Villa Lobos Library will debate the book “Pai, pai”, written by João Silvério Trevisan, which tells the story of a father who does not accept his son’s homosexuality. Spaces are limited, but there’s still time to register through the library’s website! The debate will take place on the 27th of May, Friday.
Uber
A recent announcement by Uber informed that its psychological care channel will now serve cases of both racism and homophobia, in conjunction with the MeToo Brasil movement. An adequate response and a welcome like this are extremely important for the LGBTQIA+ community and for Brazil, which is an LGBTphobic country and the first in the world in transfemicide. So, it makes you want to wait for an Uberzinho that doesn’t cancel the trip just for this announcement of their new policy, go.
Stations – Sé, Jabaquara and República
Subway stations in the city of São Paulo received rainbow flags, lighting on trains, conversation circles and will also receive posters and videos for the panels and monitors of some stations, in addition to periodic actions with mobile service units, for guidance and reception on topics involving intolerance, combating violence and much more.
Event on employability in Paranaguá
Brhanda Santos, who coordinates the National LGBTQIA+ Alliance in Paranaguá, which is in the State of Paraná, was one of those responsible for creating an event in partnership with the city hall so that the date could be commemorated. The celebration was a round of lectures and debates focusing on work and employability for those who are LGBTQIA+. She commented that those who live with the population, the complaints and problems that are part of the community are aware of how LGBTphobia is almost rooted in society, and in multiple ways.
Topics such as those addressed at the event are extremely important and it would be magnificent if more and more cities were mobilized to hold events like this one and this awareness message became more and more frequent.
The 17th of May is a struggle, it is strength, it is collective.
