Movies about stories involving dogs are naturally exciting. Especially for those who, like me, are in love with them. Hardly in the end I don’t end up crying, lol. It was no different with Dog: The Adventure of a Lifetimewhich will premiere this Thursday in theaters.
Former soldier Jackson Briggs (Channing Tatum) is tasked with taking Belgian Shepherd Lulu to the funeral of the dog’s best human friend, Private Riley. Briggs accepts the assignment in return for the necessary recommendation from his commander to return to active duty. However, both Briggs and Lulu suffer from disturbances resulting from their time in the war. So, along the way from Washington to Arizona, Briggs and Lulu drive each other crazy. They break a handful of laws, narrowly escape death to make it to the funeral. That’s when they realize that they will have to learn to live in harmony, and avoid confusion and conflicts.
What did I think of Dog?
I had seen other very exciting films of the genre, with similar stories. Are they Megan Leavey e Max – Hero Dog (Amazon Prime). Dog: The Adventure of a Lifetime is a fiction resulting from the inspiration of an HBO documentary, War Dog: A Soldier’s Best Friend (available on HBO Max). It was co-produced by Channing Tatum and Reid Carolin, who together co-direct Dog. It is their first experience directing a feature film.
The movie starts a little slow, until we know more about Briggs’ story. But once Lulu enters the story, everything starts to work better and more interestingly. Although when other people show up, you’re left wanting more from Briggs and Lulu. Channing’s chemistry with the dog is sensational. Incidentally, Lulu is made by three different Belgian shepherds. Due to the pandemic, Channing said he was able to spend more time with the dogs before filming resumed. Obviously it worked. At the end of the film, you can see the inscription “in memory of Lulu”. This Lulu was Channing’s dog, who died of cancer after the two took one last trip together (pictured below).
Channing Tatum went a long time without playing a leading role in a movie. He made a cameo in Free Guy and voiced some animations. Lost City e Dog were your return. He is always an empathetic – and sympathetic – actor. It works well in both drama and comedy moments. And obviously he loves dogs.
