I confess that I don’t remember seeing a movie as crazy as Everything Everywhere at the Same Time. Starring Michelle Yeoh, the film received rave reviews in the United States. A lot of people saying it was the best movie of the year. I’m not in that group, but I recognize some extremely positive points. Everything Everywhere at the Same Time opens this Thursday in theaters, after a week of paid previews.
It is difficult to tell the story without giving away some spoilers of the absurd stories. But let’s go. Evelyn is an eastern immigrant who runs a laundry room with her husband. She lives for work, and now faces an income tax problem. On the day of a neighborhood party, she still has to deal with relationship problems with her daughter and her father. But when she goes to the Federal Revenue building to talk to an auditor, something very strange happens…
The film ends up taking Evelyn to travel through different universes where she followed the most diverse paths. However, the entire structure of the multiverse is in danger and only Evelyn can save everything. This provides crazy trips, fun moments, some even touching. She has death and rebirth. And a lot of fighting, which makes us remember moments of Michelle Yeoh in the classic The Tiger and the Dragon.
What did I think of the movie?
However, it’s a crazy movie at times. If you like structured action movies, it’s best not to pass by. It’s also quite long – at two hours and 19 minutes. You will probably not understand much of the story, especially after the big villain appears. There are also the visual elements that might seem ridiculous to more straightforward people, like the donuts and sausage fingers.
But in fact, the film, with all its craziness, ends up slipping into a family love story. And also about untrodden paths, about letting your guard down. Mainly about enjoying life with what it offers. However, the path taken by Everything Everywhere at the Same Time it is long and sometimes difficult to follow.
But there are a lot of positives. The cast, in particular, is amazing. Michelle Yeoh is always an amazing actress, and she’s nailed it here with what has to be the most difficult role of her career. Jamie Lee Curtis is hilarious and perfect. In the few moments she appears on screen, it’s impossible to take your eyes off her. And the big surprise. Evelyn’s husband Waymond is made by none other than the little boy from Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom, Ke Huy Quan. The interesting thing is that he looked like Jackie Chan, lol!
No final, Everything Everywhere at the Same Time It’s the kind of movie you can either love or hate. But it will certainly never be indifferent.
