The fourth season of Netflix’s hit supernatural mystery Stranger Things, which has just aired its final two episodes, was famous for its length before it was even released. The season ran for nine episodes, all but one over 75 minutes long. The final episode, at two and a half hours, was longer than most feature films.
It won’t be the same for the show’s fifth and final season, showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer have revealed. With less setup work to do and the story rolling right from the climax of Stranger Things 4 for the new season, they expect episodes to move at a faster pace.
Matt Duffer, um dos showrunners de Stranger Things, disse:
“The only reason we don’t expect it to be that long is that this season, if you look at it, it’s almost two hours of rise before our kids are really drawn into a supernatural mystery. You know them, you see them in their lives, they’re struggling to adjust to high school and so on, Steve is trying to find a date, all of that. None of this will obviously happen [na 5ª temporada].”
He continued:
“For the first time, we didn’t wrap things up at the end of 4, so it’s going to happen. I don’t know if it’s going to be 100 miles per hour at the start of 5, but it’s going to be moving really fast. The characters will already be in action. They will already have a goal and a race, and I think that will last at least a few hours and make this season feel really different.”
That said, don’t expect the Duffers’ newfound love of brevity to extend to the show’s final episode, which will likely run similarly to the season four finale. “We’re more likely to do what we did here, which is just have a 2.5-hour episode,” Matt Duffer said, before joking (hopefully) that it would match the infamous expansion to Peter Jackon’s third film, Lord of the Rings. . “I’m sure the closure will be much longer, it will beReturn of the King-ish with, like, eight endings.”
However, all of this is subject to change. The Duffers told Collider that they plan to start the “writers’ room” for season five in August, with actor David Harbor estimating a “mid-2024” air date. So there is still room for things to get out of hand.
Matt Duffer also told Collider:
“We thought season four would have eight [episódios], and they would be of regular duration. So if you had interviewed us before 4, that’s what I would have said.”
