Actor Miles Teller, who plays pilot Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw in Top Gun: Maverick, has spoken repeatedly with Tom Cruise about turning the growing franchise into a proper trilogy. According to the international website Entertainment Tonight, the ball is in Cruise’s court.
“It’s all up to Tom,” Teller said. “I’ve been talking to him about it… that would be great, but it all depends on TC. For him, sharing Top Gun with me and so many of these other young actors has been such a crazy ride, and it still will.”
Teller added that working on Top Gun: Maverick was “amazing”. And while Top Gun: Maverick has been an exhilarating experience for audiences and its actors — and recently in the pandemic era it became Cruise’s first film to gross $1 billion at the global box office — not all fans seem to be happy. In a recent interview, actor Mickey Rourke – Cruise’s contemporary from the 80s – called the film “irrelevant” and said that Cruise “has been doing the same f*cking role for 35 years”.
Paramount hasn’t announced any sequels to Top Gun: Maverick, though given its success, it’s no surprise that rumors have persisted since its US release in May. The next big Cruise movies on the horizon are the two-part sequels to Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning, scheduled to arrive in 2023 and 2024.
Milles also stars in the recently released Nettflix Spiderhead, an adaptation of the dystopian short story “Escape from Spiderhead” by George Saunders and first published in The New Yorker.
