At the press conference, company executives also announced their adherence to the UN Global Compact
Grupo Globo presented this Thursday (14), its first sustainability report, as part of a process started in early 2021 and named ‘Agenda 2030’. At the press conference, company executives also announced their adherence to the UN Global Compact, which establishes 17 sustainable development goals, the SDGs.
The company’s ESG initiative, which includes TV Globo, the 26 pay TV channels, Globoplay and digital products, includes six commitments.
The first, the production and distribution of content connected with social and environmental evolution; the second, diversity and inclusion; the third, well-being and work environment; the fourth, environment; the fifth, governance; and the sixth, education, now made tangible by the LED Movement.
“It is the official launch of an ESG agenda that is the result of historic work that the Group has done throughout its existence”, said Paulo Marinho, CEO of Globo. For him, they are guidelines that are part of the company’s values and mission.
Headed by Manuel Belmar, Director of Finance, Legal and Infrastructure, the project started with 20 people. As an initial objective, to understand what was being done and “recognise what remains to be done”, said the executive.
To begin with, they benchmarked international media companies to see moves and potential avenues of action. They found content to be the main asset and connecting power that media organizations can use to drive the agenda.
Learning that was connected with the analysis of internal processes and with the perspectives of five stakeholders: employees, consumers, advertisers, investors and shareholders (Marinho family). From the crossing of this information with the business objectives, the six commitments were born.
“Worldwide, we’re taking it a step further,” says Belmar, comparing it to ESG initiatives seen elsewhere. The move makes the group the first national media company to have a formal commitment to the cause.
The initiative is in the phase of defining goals and metrics of what it should promise for 2030. In “environment”, however, some are already aligned. The organization wants to have a 100% renewable energy matrix, currently at 95%, and to manage waste without directing any material to landfills – currently, it can only do this with 50% of leftovers.
According to Maurício Gonzalez, leader of the Environment group, the group ‘is investing in many technologies and creating new initiatives’. There is also a commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 15% by 2026 and 30% by 2030, announced when debt bonds were issued abroad earlier this year.
Campaign
To communicate the initiative, it is launching a campaign that should be supported over the next 3 months, with six films, each dedicated to explaining one of the commitments. In digital, the strategy is to detail the data present in this first report, reinforce the legacy and address the next steps that the group should print. In addition, they provide for actions that dialogue with each of the five stakeholders.
