Global project, signed VMLY&R Madrid, rescues the speeches of the Rio de Janeiro councilor murdered four years ago
The Marielle Franco Institute is presenting “A Voz de Marielle”, a global project that rescues the speeches of the Rio de Janeiro councilor murdered four years ago and seeks to amplify her messages. Created in partnership with VMLY&R Madrid, Vetor Lab and DaHouse, it uses facial recognition and augmented reality to connect images and audio.
Immersive, the experience designed by Vetor Lab transforms Marielle’s face into a portal for her voice, based on facial recognition and intelligence artificial to recognize portraits of the activist, such as photographs, graffiti and illustrations.
To access, users have to access the website avozdemarielle.com, and point the cell phone camera at Marielle’s face to activate the most emblematic speeches. Each speech has a soundtrack, developed in partnership with the audio producer DaHouse, which used synthesizer technology to instrumentalize the councilwoman’s voice to create the composition.
The project also allows people to record their interactions and share them on social media with the hashtag #AVozDeMarielle.
“Connecting her voice to her images is a way of not letting the struggle empty and lose its meaning. We are using technology to ensure that the memory of black women will be forever protected and spread across generations”, says Anielle Franco, executive director of Instituto Marielle Franco and sister of Marielle.
For Manir Fadel, creative director of VMLY&R Spain, the action is an opportunity for society to remember Marielle’s strength and keep it alive. “In a country where social injustice and prejudice is worsening every day, immortalizing the voice of a black woman, LGBTQIA+, from a favela who arrived in parliament fighting for equality is fundamental”.
To drive the action, the institute counts on digital influencers as well as activists, graffiti artists and artists from the Marielle Franco Institute’s Seed Network.
