In bars, chocolates, cake or even brigadeiro, regardless of the form, chocolate is always present. No wonder the food has a date of its own, which is July 7th. But do Brazilians really consume that much chocolate?
According to online roulette game site Betway, yes. People eat about 2.6 pounds of chocolate a year. However, this value is far from being quickly ingested. From what the survey pointed out, 60% of consumers prefer to taste the food after lunch, that is, when the pieces are added up, the more than two kilos appear.
The survey also found that milk chocolate is the favorite version of 51% of Brazilians. For 25% the tastiest is the semisweet, for 14% the best is the white chocolate and 9% say they consume the bitter.
In the case of women, food was remembered as an ally of PMS (premenstrual tension), and this can be explained by the properties it has. As cocoa has substances that help you relax, the sweet relieves moments of hormonal fluctuation and stress.
Lacta and Nestlé are favorites
Recently, users started debating which brands of chocolate were the best. The main dispute was between Nestlé, Lacta and Garoto. To justify the discussion, people pointed out the names of some chocolates, such as Prestigio da Nestlé and Sonho de Valsa da Lacta.
Betway’s Chocolate Survey showed that Lacta and Nestlé do indeed divide the opinions of Brazilians. About 37% prefer Lacta, while 27% like Nestlé better. Next are Hershey’s (13%), Milka (11%) and Ferrero (6%). The only region where Lacta does not take the podium is in the Northeast, where the preference is for Nestlé (37.5%).
In turn, when it comes to chocolate itself, Lacta also appears in the lead. Bis is the country favorite (27%), followed by Ouro Branco (Lacta) and Twix (Mars), and Hershey’s Cookies and Cream.
the beginning of passion
Chocolate is so present in all cultures that people no longer wonder how it all started. After all, the recipes of past generations already had the food, and those of other countries too, because it is something consumed all over the world.
According to National Geographic data, the first evidence of the use of cocoa dated back to about 4,000 years ago, in Mesoamerica – in what is now Mexico. For scholars, the Mesoamericans were not only the first to use the fruit, but also to cultivate it. In other words, since that time people already knew the power that food had.
On the other hand, the domestication of cocoa seems to have occurred 3,600 years ago. When “domesticated”, a plant starts to be analyzed more carefully. People start to select desirable characteristics, for example.
There are several types of cocoa, however, what seems to have started chocolate was the criollo. According to new studies, it was first domesticated, but not in Central America, but in South America (in the region that is now Ecuador). That is, although it was believed for a long time that chocolate began in the region of Mexico, today it is known that cocoa was cultivated in South America before.
As people kept in contact along the Pacific coast, one explanation is that cocoa was traded from South America to Central America. Therefore, the region of Mexico would have been one of the first to cultivate the plant, but not the first in fact.
In Brazil, the story is much more recent. Cocoa beans were brought here in 1746 by a Frenchman. At first, the plant was cultivated in the south of Bahia, a region where it is now affectionately called Costa do Cacau. Currently, however, most Brazilian production takes place in Pará. In fact, Brazil is the 7th country that produces the most cocoa in the world.
Honoring the position of one of the largest cocoa producers, Brazilians do not fail to enjoy chocolate. Although not everyone agrees on which food is the best, as the research pointed out, the passion for sweets is unanimous!
