Emma Thompson is a sensational actress with an unsurpassed sense of humor that gets better with every movie. I said once that she has a special talent too to thrill me. Emma once again excels in Good Luck, Big Leo, which opens this week in theaters after several paid previews. The film entertains, moves, and is not ashamed to talk about sex, pleasure and orgasm.
In the film, Emma is Nancy Stokes, a teacher who has just retired. Although she has had a satisfying life, there is one thing she has never had. Nancy has never had sex worthy of being called good, she has never had an orgasm. But that’s water under the bridge, her husband died. And now Nancy has a goal, a new plan. She hires a young sex worker and will (anonymously) book a nice hotel room. She even knows the young man’s name: Leo Grande. Leo knows what he does and he knows he does his job well. At first, Nancy seems like just another customer and a few more hours of work. But after a few dates, the two will be completely different.
What did I think of the movie?
The structure of the film is almost like a filmed theater. Most of the time it’s just the two characters inside a hotel room during their encounters. Also, most of the time, it’s fun. But deep down, it’s also dramatic, as it describes the situation of many women who don’t know their bodies and who don’t know the pleasure of sex. With each new encounter (there are 4), these two characters present themselves differently. Nancy always tries to make herself smaller, as if that were a shield. And Leo, who is very good at what he does, tries to value her. Until she comes very close to the truth of him.
When you have a production that depends so much on chemistry, you have to have more than special actors. I confess I never really noticed Daryl McCormack much – he was the Isaiah Jesus of Peaky Blinders. He’s excellent as Leo. He has no barriers, and is a perfect foil to Emma Thompson’s Nancy.
And she…well Emma Thompson is sensational all the time, and even more so in Good luck Big Leo. You know how to be fun, derogatory, open, exciting. And she strips herself completely – both physically and mentally. It’s a relief to see an actress like her play that kind of role. One of the things that irritates me the most in a movie is when an actress is in a sex scene wearing a bra – and those of a lady, well closed, lol. And here, Emma shows herself, in her older woman’s body, that she doesn’t live in gyms. She is an actress who totally surrenders to her art. And in these bra-shaking movie times, it’s a pleasure to see a production that talks so frankly about sex. And with such a special actress. Worth knowing!
