Joker 2 will hit theaters on October 4, 2024, as per the deadline. As previously reported, the sequel’s title is Joker: Folie à deux, which writer/director Todd Phillips apparently revealed in June.
The news comes shortly after Warner Bros. Discovery unceremoniously shut down Batgirl as it was in full post-production, meaning there’s still some solid Batman content coming. The caption for Joker 2 translates to “madness of two” or “madness shared by two”. The title is a reference to a medical term for a mental disorder shared by two people, or a shared delusional disorder – or possibly hallucinations passed from one individual to another.
All of these elements, within the context of the 2019 Oscar-winning film, can refer to how Arthur Fleck’s chaotic villainy is embraced by Gotham City in the first film. Or it could also refer to the Joker meeting Phillips’ version of Harley Quinn. Or even Batman, perhaps. Who can say?
Phoenix will earn $20 million to reprise his role as the Clown Prince of Crime. And while we now have a title and release date, the film’s plot remains a mystery. Earlier this summer, there were rumors — and still unconfirmed — that the movie could be a musical starring Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn.
In addition to Phoenix, Joker also starred Robert De Niro, Zazi Beetz and Frances Conroy. Since Joker was not expected to be such a commercial success, Warner Bros. sought outside investors to mitigate its risk if the film did not arrive.
Warner Bros. would also have given Phillips and star Phoenix lucrative backend deals so they could reap the benefits of Joker’s massive box office success — over $1 billion at the global box office. According to international website The Hollywood Reporter, Phillips may soon begin serving as a consultant on future DC projects for Warner Bros.
