The strategy considers the gradual reopening of some restaurants in the capital, Kiev and the west of the country.
McDonald’s is making plans to resume its operation in Ukraine, which has been paralyzed since the Russian invasion of the country in February this year. The fast food chain has 109 restaurants in the Eastern European country. The information was revealed this Thursday (11).
The plan includes the gradual reopening of some restaurants in the capital, Kiev and in the west of the country, regions that are currently furthest from the conflict. Western companies like Nike and KFC, for example, maintain operations in the Ukrainian capital.
We spoke extensively with our employees who expressed a strong desire to return to work and see our restaurants in Ukraine reopen, Paul Pomroy, corporate senior vice president of international operated markets, wrote in a message to employees. In recent months, the belief that this would support a small but important sense of normalcy has strengthened.
There is no information, however, about the start of reopening and the number of restaurants initially.
In addition to the closure of restaurants in Ukraine over the past six months, the war has also driven McDonald’s out of Russia. In May, it announced the sale of the 850 restaurants it had in the country.
“The humanitarian crisis caused by the war and the precipitous unpredictable operating environment have led McDonald’s to conclude that continued ownership of the business in Russia is neither sustainable nor consistent with McDonald’s values,” CEO Chris Kempczinski said at the time.
