Duolingo, a platform focused on language learning, presents the fourth annual edition of Duocon. Last year’s Duocon attracted over 130,000 online participants. This year’s conference transcends the linguistic field, with the presence of celebrities and experts from the fields of gastronomy, music, mathematics and dance. For the first time, two of the characters from the Duolingo world, Lili and Zari, will host the event, which will be broadcast live. Follow it up close today from noon (Brasilia time) on the website: duolingo.com/duocon.
The agenda includes highlights that reveal details about Duolingo’s most exciting products, such as the complete makeover of Duolingo ABC, an app that teaches children ages 3-8 to read using gamified lessons with cheerful, charisma-filled characters.
There will also be a talk by Sammi Siegel, the chief software engineer behind Duolingo’s first non-language teaching app. We’ll hear from Linda Simensky, the distinguished executive of children’s TV programming, as she showcases the stories of Duolingo’s original cast of characters. In addition, we’ll give you an exclusive preview of our new social features, such as Mission of Friends, designed for everyone to have fun while pursuing language learning goals.
Luis von Ahn, co-founder and CEO of Duolingo, said:
“We are proud to broadcast Duocon virtually so that people around the world can watch and find out how we are improving the Duolingo app and expanding our reach beyond languages. We had over 130,000 spectators from over 150 countries at the last event, with a huge audience in India and Brazil. We hope that this year’s Duocon will help our students across the planet feel more connected and engaged with the Duolingo learning community.”
In addition to product news, the event also brings together an impressive group of global talent to explore how people communicate and connect in other types of language. The Duolingo CEO will interview chef José Andrés, considered one of the “100 most influential people” by Time magazine, with questions about his favorite childhood dishes and how food became his life’s mission. There will be performances by Angelique Kidjo, winner of five Grammy Awards, and Mary J Lee, coach of a successful Korean reality show: the dance competition Produce 48. Even math can be seen as a universal language, and Dr. Tom Crawford (who on Youtube is known as “Naked Mathematician”, or the “Naked Mathematician”) will demonstrate this with fun and surprising applications of the number pi.
