August has been a rough month at HBO Max with Warner Bros. Discovery removing a number of shows from Cartoon Network, as well as original shows, as well as shelving a near-complete movie like Batgirl. At the time, it seemed strictly commercial, with Warner Bros. Discovery releasing a statement praising actress Leslie Grace.
According to the studio’s statement regarding Batgirl’s cancellation:
“The decision not to release Batgirl reflects the strategic shift in our leadership as it pertains to the DC Universe and HBO Max,” the statement reads. Leslie Grace is an incredibly talented actress and this decision is not a reflection of her acting. We are incredibly grateful to the filmmakers… and look forward to collaborating with everyone again in the near future.”
However, co-directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah revealed to French media outlet Skript that the studio actually blocked access to the footage and that’s how they found out it had been cancelled. When asked if they had any of the footage, Fallah said they had none. According to him:
“Adil called me and told me, ‘Go ahead. Shoot everything on your phone,’” Fallah said. “I went to the server… Everything is gone. We were like, shit!’ All the scenes with Batman in them!”
Both directors confirmed that Warner Bros. I told them it wasn’t a talent issue on our part or the actress’s, or even the quality of the film. According to El Arbi:
“They told us it was a strategic shift. There was a new management and they wanted to save some money.”
The directors’ original reports being blocked were mistranslated as “deleted”, with fans thinking the film had been taken off production servers. The directors hope fans will eventually see the film, but it cannot be shown as-is and would need to be completed and visual effects added.
