The long-awaited ninth edition of Rock in Rio opens its gates at 2 pm, in Rio de Janeiro, and wants to leave its mark not only as a mega musical festival, but as an event more committed to sustainability.
One of the novelties is the tickets in digital format, which can be downloaded on the cell phone, replacing the wristbands; simple example, but which, on a large scale, has an impact on waste reduction.
The Mundo stage – the biggest main stage in the festival’s history – is made of 100% recycled and recyclable steel. Developed in partnership with Gerdau, the 200 tons of material used in the structure can be reused in new stages or reused in projects for houses, buildings and cars, for example.
Today, attractions such as Sepultura and the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra are on stage at 6 pm, followed by Dream Theater, Megadeth and Iron Maiden.
For the first time, the event has a public sustainability plan, announced in September last year, with targets for 2022 and commitments for 2030, linked to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
Recycling
According to the organization of Rock In Rio, the event was the first in Latin America to be certified by ISO 20121 — Sustainable Event Management System — currently sending 80% of all waste generated during the event for recycling. The goal for 2030 is to divert all your waste from landfill. The event also offsets its carbon emissions.
For this edition, the brands Rock in Rio, Coca-Cola, Heineken®, Natura, DORITOS®, KITKAT® and Braskem came together to recycle plastic cups, snacks and chocolate packaging consumed during the event.
There will be 4.5 million plastic cups produced for the seven days of the festival, around 130 thousand KITKAT® packages, in addition to DORITOS®.
The objective is to encourage the public to make the correct disposal during the event. Heineken and Coca-Cola printed encouraging messages on the cups. The volume of this material collected in Cidade do Rock will be transformed by Braskem into circular raw material for the production of packaging for Natura products.
In the case of snacks and chocolate packaging, Braskem will be responsible for the process of capturing and forwarding the materials for recycling. DORITOS® and KITKAT® will strengthen the communication strategy at the festival to invite people to engage in the sustainability project.
The action aims to encourage people to correctly dispose of their waste, not just in dumpsters but at the four disposal points where Braskem has collection points.
The plastic materials discarded in Braskem’s action can be exchanged for points, which become gifts to be used at the event, such as sunscreen, inflatable mats or cell phone chargers.
“This year, in addition to the initiatives with recyclables, we are composting the organic waste from artistic caterings and suppliers. In assembly alone, we already have 650kg less of organic waste for the landfill”, says Roberta Medina, executive vice president of Rock in Rio, about the sustainability actions of this edition of the event.
“We are convinced that we will only be able to do better every day if the entire production chain is involved and if these initiatives are within the reach of more and more companies. This union of several companies in favor of the same objective is an example of how this can happen”, he says.
The post-event includes planning for the correct disposal of waste. The process involves Rock In Rio partners such as Comlurb, cooperatives, Braskem, Clean Plastic and Reutiliza Já until the recycled resin is delivered to Natura, for the manufacture of personal care product packaging.
