The year begins with the arrival of Schurmann family and crew of the sailboat Kat in
Christmas with the voice of the oceans, a world expedition that has the global support of the United Nations Environment Program. Coming from Fernando de Noronha, the sailors anchor the vessel at the Natal Yacht Club, the first point on the expansion of the Brazilian route as a result of the new COVID-19 strain, Ômicron.
“Faced with this challenge, we decided to further minimize the risks and turn this moment into an opportunity to expand our national itinerary, valuing the Northeast even more and including the North in our journey, which remains in the country for another 50 days. In other words, the challenge motivated an adaptation that led us to contemplate practically the entire coastline of Brazil and we are very happy to start 2022 by bringing our Voice of the Oceans to Rio Grande do Norte”, says Vilfredo Schurmann.
The expedition that began in August 2021 in Balneário Camboriú, Santa Catarina – and now arrives in Natal – will pass through more than 60 points in Brazil and the world, until disembarking in New Zealand in 2023. In the Potiguar capital and region, Schurmann Family and Voz dos Oceanos crew provide local initiatives and participate in activities related to their mission to raise awareness among the world’s population about plastic waste in the oceans, seeking and giving visibility to solutions that are being developed, at home and abroad, to combat this problem. .
“It is very sad to know that so many animals die daily from ingesting plastic, including turtles, whales and sea birds. After all, around eight million tons of plastic reach the oceans every year. And this is an issue that already affects our health. Through the food chain, we are also consuming micro and nano-plastic. We need to change our attitude as quickly as possible”, points out Heloisa Schurmann, who, along with the Family, is a supporter of the Clean Seas campaign of the United Nations Environment Program.
Taking on this mission and willingness to leave a legacy for the next generations, oceans and planet, the Schurmann Family and crew took, in 2021, Voz dos Oceanos to 12 national destinations: Balneário Camboriú/SC, Santos/SP, Ilhabela/SP, Ubatuba /SP, Ilha Grande/RJ, Rio de Janeiro/RJ, Búzios/RJ, Vitória/ES, Abrolhos/BA, Salvador/BA, Recife/PE and Fernando de Noronha/PE. This week, they arrive in Natal/RN, where they will stay for about 10 days to then navigate through the
Maranhão and Pará States – last point of the expedition in Brazil. From there, it sets sail for the international route, sailing through places like the Caribbean, the Atlantic coast of the United States, the Bermuda archipelago, Mexico, the Panama Canal, the Galapagos, the South Pacific Ocean, Polynesia and New Zealand – where the expedition concludes its mission through more than 60 national and international places in two years. Voz dos Oceanos is sponsored by Corona, Natura Kaiak, Faber-Castell, Sabesp and RaiaDrogasil – who have just embarked on the expedition.
