“We know that children are inspired by what they see around them, which is why it is so important for them to see themselves reflected in role models who overcame obstacles and became the brave women they are today,” says Lisa McKnight, Senior Vice President and global head of Barbie and Mattel dolls.
For Doani Emanuela, “to be recognized as an inspiring woman is something immeasurable, an emotion that overflows. It’s my story as a child and as a woman. My mother raised me to follow my dreams”, says she, who in addition to maintaining the online channel with a bilingual teaching approach, also teaches classes for deaf and hearing students in the interior of São Paulo. “I’m sure that Barbie was responsible for breaking paradigms in the childhood of many people, including mine, because while society said otherwise, the doll showed that it was possible for a woman to have her own car, her house, her profession”, he concludes. the teacher.
Around the world, women remain underrepresented in leadership roles, according to research by the NYU Cognitive Development Laboratory led by psychology professor Dr. Andrei Cimpian, and assistant professor of psychology, Dr. Andrea Vial, whose doctoral postgraduate degree was funded by Mattel.
Teachers found that 5-10 year old girls are less likely to take on leadership roles or lead a group activity, and they also analyzed a child’s reaction to taking on more responsibility. The researchers also found that when exposed to female role models, girls — and boys — are more likely to volunteer to lead a group activity.
Thus, through a multifaceted campaign, Barbie has supported women entrepreneurs and is increasingly committed to helping to reinforce the unlimited potential of children around the world through actions aimed at education and leadership skills. Mattel’s initiative began with the 2018 ‘Dream Gap’ survey, which showed that from the age of five, girls begin to doubt their potential and lose confidence in their own competence.
Created in 1959 and today with more than 200 professions, Barbie seeks to inspire future generations and show that they can be anything they want. Through diversity and inclusion, the brand shows children that with effort, dedication and perseverance it is possible to fulfill their dreams and everything they set out to do.
The doll continues to inspire children in Brazil and around the world and, through various actions, encourages them to feel inspired and empowered, as dreaming of what they want to be is just the beginning.
