Virtually everyone who grew up in the 90s and 2000s knows Lara Croft. With the boom in video game consoles, and especially with the rise of the classic Playstation, one of the most popular games was Tomb Raider.
This year, the franchise completed 25 years of trajectory, which was not limited to electronic games. There were books, movies, cosplays and countless inspirations that came from the young explorer.
To celebrate, Insight Editions has released a special edition book that showcases the most traditional cooking recipes from the places Lara has already ventured into. Japan, Mexico, France, Egypt, England… as you might imagine, the list is extensive.
Lara was one of the first female figures to gain a prominent role in video games. Brave, explorer and daring, her appearance – inspired by Indiana Jones – was a gateway to a universe where girls can be whatever they want, as archeologists or gamers. Its emergence has raised important debates about gender equality in the media.
In cinema, Lara first appeared in 2001 through Angelina Jolie, who made it possible for her image to be more publicized and prestigious by the public. Later, in 2018, another version was released based on the new generation of the franchise: Survivor, played by Alicia Vikander.
Also, Tomb Raider was a cultural landmark because it made it possible for people to look at the evolution of technology and the graphics industry in programming.
Even after its first release in 1996, Square Enix continues to work Lara Croft for new audiences. Who doesn’t remember the character’s iconic triangular breasts in the early days of the franchise?
Certainly these 25 years will not be the only ones for Lara Croft. This is because its presence was not restricted to the past, but is constantly honored and renewed for the present. As long as there is a game industry, the Englishwoman’s portrait will always be there as an example.
