Netflix announced yesterday, December 17, that it is producing an adaptation of the BioShock game franchise. The unexpected announcement was made through the streaming company’s social media. Although more details were not given, the participation of Take Two Interactive and 2K in the project is certain.
Check out the tweet from Netflix talking about the Bioshock adaptation below:
“We all make choices, but in the end, it’s our choices that make us.”
The phrase makes reference to the BioShock franchise itself in the world of games. The series takes place in the 1960s and deals with Jack’s story. The protagonist falls into the ocean and discovers a city imagined to be a utopia, called “Rupture”, however, he realizes that everything started to go wrong after a while.
The first game in the franchise was released in 2007 for Playstation 3, XBox 360 and PC. Since then the saga has become a success, both for its gameplay and the script. The last story-related game was BioShock Infinite, which was released in 2013. However, in 2016, a collection of previous games was made available.
It is not the first time that the idea of a live action adapting the story of the BioShock saga has been put on the agenda. Universal Studios almost made their version of the franchise for the cinemas, however the project did not go ahead. According to Gore Verbinski, who would be the director, the reason for the cancellation was the high budget and the fact that it was an adult film.
New information about the BioShock adaptation for Netflix is expected to come out soon.
