8K technology and Globo
This was the first time the technology was delivered to the end consumer using the existing resources on the platform. Globoplay. Globo’s research on 8K began almost a decade ago, in 2013. The first practical recordings took place that year, in Carnival productions, already in partnership with NHK, a Japanese public broadcaster. Demonstration was also done in the world Cup do Brasil 2014 – this is a live and public exhibition, in an auditorium in Urca. In the Rio Olympics, public demonstrations were held at the Museum of Tomorrow. At the World Cup in Russia, public exhibitions were held. In 2019, in the Rock in Rio, 8K clips were produced.
“For the past three decades, Intel has been a driving force in new media formats, access and content delivery, partnering with industry leaders such as Globo and standards bodies around the world. 8K technologies are the next frontier for media and sports broadcasting. We are delighted to be recognized by iABM for our deployment of the Olympics 8K live open internet. We look forward to helping unlock the potential of this media format,” said Rick Echevarria, Intel Vice President and General Manager, Special Olympics & Olympics.
8K is the most advanced standard in image quality perceptible to the human eye, with a resolution 16 times higher than HD (high definition) and 4 times higher than 4K. The images, more contemplative, offer the public a real immersion in competitions. The 8K HDR coverage in Tokyo is the result of a co-production between OBS (Olympic Broadcasting Services) and NHK – Japanese public TV. The contents, in turn, are processed by Globo and Intel, and made available free of charge on Globoplay, on an experimental basis, extending the TV of the future research effort to homes that are now part of the technology test.
